In this stunning visual account, South African photographer Trevor Appleson documents the bright colors and exotic people of Mexico with cinematic still lifes that evoke Old Master portraits. Wrestlers destroy candy-filled pinatas, resulting in broken and burned cartoonish forms. A group of young boxers with their clumsy gloved hands attempt to break eggs into a bowl. Pictures that at first seem to be representations of idle rural people show, upon closer inspection, graves and the aftermath of brutal industrial farming. With a remarkable ability to avoid the obvious and involve his subjects in the creation of his work, Appleson's images offer a revelatory, in-depth look at life in Mexico City and its surroundings.
Author Biography
Born in South Africa, Trevor Appleson is a self-taught photographer who lives in London. His work has been exhibited around the globe.
Alison Green is a London-based art historian, critic, and curator.
